The IBCLC Pathway 3 mentorship programme is a structured training route for aspiring lactation consultants who require supervised clinical hours and tailored education. Working one to one with an experienced IBCLC, the mentee completes five hundred supervised hours through consultations, antenatal education, group support and reflective practice. The programme also requires completion of the fourteen science subjects, lactation specific education and written and practical assignments that demonstrate clinical reasoning and professional readiness. Over the thirty six month period the mentor provides guidance, oversight and assessment. The mentor must be satisfied that the candidate is competent, ethical and prepared for independent practice before recommending them to sit the IBLCE examination. Each persons program is unique and must be agreed before commencement with both the Primary Mentor and IBLCE.
